College Football – Week 10

Introducing your Burger Gazette College Football Team! With the first College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday, a few Burgers decided to make some predictions for the upcoming week of College Football. Meet Jacob McGuire, Victoria Gruen, Alayna Zenger, and Jacob Abbott! We’ve identified the most important games this week as well as listed some of our favorite teams’ games, and we have predictions and comments on the games for this upcoming week of college football. We’ll continue to make our predictions over the next few weeks until the end of the season.

Game of the Week: #1 Alabama Crimson Tide @ #4 LSU Tigers (Line: LSU +14)

For obvious reasons, this is the Game of the Week, and possibly even the Game of the Season. This game has huge playoff implications and even huger SEC implications – these two teams lead the loaded SEC West. If Alabama wins (expected), they’ll most likely finish the season undefeated and national champions. If LSU upsets, the Tigers are suddenly legitimate contenders in the SEC, though their path will be very difficult.

JM: The Tide keep rolling. It’s hard to cheer against them, and I predict this game will not be as close as people think. While LSU does have the top-rated defense in the SEC, Tagovailoa is just too good to be stopped. Alabama will cruise easily.

VG: Alabama’s good. That’s why they’re number one. But every year, they have lost at least one game. LSU is tough and might be the one to beat them.

Upset of the Week: Northwestern Wildcats vs. #3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Line: NW +8)

Notre Dame’s path to the playoffs is pretty simple: Win out and you’re in. It won’t be easy, however. Notre Dame will have to travel to Ryan Field to take on a talented Northwestern team that is coming off four straight wins.

VG: Upsets are what make college football exciting and great. Notre Dame is probably going to win but if the Wildcats manage to beat them, it’s going to be one good game.

Game 1: #5 Michigan Wolverines vs. #14 Penn State Nittany Lions (Line: MICH -10)

With Ohio State’s loss to Purdue two weeks ago, Michigan rose quickly as the primary contender in the Big Ten East. If Michigan wins, they position themselves ever closer to the Playoffs, but if Penn State wins, Michigan will still be tied for 1st in the division (with Ohio State) but their playoff hopes will be dead. Penn State needs a signature win desperately after losing to Ohio State and Michigan State in consecutive weekends.

JM: I’m calling it. This is the Wolverine’s year. They’re going to defeat PSU in a close game in the Big House.

Game 2: #6 Georgia Bulldogs vs. #11 Kentucky Wildcats (Line: UK +9.5)

This is the game that might very well decide the SEC East. A Georgia win leaves them in sole possession of 1st place in the SEC East following their signature win over Florida last week. Kentucky, however, is no sleeper – they can very well pull off the upset, which would also position them in for 1st in the East division.

JM: I was hoping Kentucky could make a run for it this year. And so far, they have, since they’re ranked #11. But UGA is still the top dog in the East, and I think they win over Mark Stoops’ Wildcats. After all, dogs do chase cats.

Game 3: #15 Texas Longhorns vs. #12 West Virginia Mountaineers (Line: TEX -2.5)

Texas and West Virginia both have one conference loss. West Virginia is coming off of a spectacular win over Baylor while Texas will be attempting to come back from their upset at Oklahoma State. Whichever team wins this game primes itself for the Conference Championship showdown, most likely against the Sooners.

JM: Apparently, Texas is not back. Tom Herman made a splash with his win over the Sooners, but that loss to Oklahoma State will haunt them all season, especially if the Longhorns win the Big-12 and don’t go to the playoffs.

Game 4: #19 Iowa Hawkeyes @ Purdue Boilermakers (Line: PUR -3)

This is the only non-loyalty game in which one team is not ranked. Despite Iowa’s ranking, Purdue is favored and at home. An Iowa win puts them in 2nd place in the division, and a Purdue win puts them in 2nd as well. Both teams are coming off of a loss, so a win here could very well define the rest of the season for either team.

JM Loyalty: Hawaii Rainbow Warriors vs. #18 Utah State Aggies (Line: HAW +18)

Hawaii started the season 6-0 but has since lost two in a row. Utah State, on the other hand, lost to Big-10 threat Michigan State, but has now reeled off 7 straight wins. The Aggies will be traveling to Hawaii, though, and no game there is a gimme.

JM: Hawaii was just a fluke. USU has been proven as a solid team this year, and they finally have a defense good enough to keep the offense in the game. And boy does that offense score. The Aggies will plow the Rainbow Warriors over in an easy win.

VG Loyalty: Oregon Ducks vs. UCLA Bruins (Line: ORE – 13)

Oregon’s loss last week damaged their reputation as a PAC-12 contender. A win over the Bruins would go a long way for Mario Cristobal and the ducks. UCLA, meanwhile, was thumped last week by Utah. For Chip Kelly to earn a win in Eugene would boost his legitimacy as a serious coach in the PAC-12.

VG: As one of the youngest teams in the nation, UCLA is still trying to figure it out. They’re getting there, though, and Oregon better watch out. Since Chip Kelly, UCLA’s head coach, used to coach the Ducks, he probably has a good idea of how Oregon works, which might help the team. It’s entirely a matter of chance.

AZ Loyalty: #17 Houston Cougars @ Southern Methodist Mustangs (Line: SMU +13.5)

Perhaps the most underrated team in college football, Houston, will take on a consistent challenger in SMU. With the game in Dallas, this contest might not be as much of a pushover as it seems to be. Houston’s been playing good football, and coming off that big win over South Florida, they should continue to do so. SMU, on the other hand, is struggling with a 3-5 record, but their games tend to be close ones.

JA Loyalty: Boise State Broncos vs. BYU Cougars (Line: BSU -13.5)

Both teams have not performed as well as either fan base would have hoped, but this new rivalry still means a lot to both teams. For Boise State, this could be the win they need to propel them into the rankings. For BYU, a win on the Smurf Turf could potentially save their season.

JM: This is a fun rivalry, though it’s not much of a rivalry any more since BYU hasn’t been playing exceptionally great football. A win in Boise will be hard for the Cougars. I think Boise State wins in a close game.
